Dustin O’Halloran est un pianiste et compositeur américain qui compte six albums solo acclamés sous son propre nom. Il est également membre du groupe A Winged Victory for the Sullen, qui a publié cinq albums, dont certains sont basés sur des partitions et des bandes originales. Il a précédemment sorti de la musique avec le groupe dreampop Dēvics, qu’il a cofondé avec Sara Lov à la fin de son adolescence, avant de se lancer dans une carrière solo. Les morceaux de son premier album solo Piano Solos (2004) ont attiré l’attention du superviseur musical Brian Reitzell, qui les a partagés avec Sofia Coppola pour l’aider à inspirer son scénario de Marie Antoinette. Coppola l’a invité à contribuer à la musique du film, ce qui a marqué sa percée en tant que compositeur de films. Ces morceaux ont ensuite été inclus dans son deuxième album solo Piano Solos Vol 2 (2006).

Les troisième et quatrième albums solo de O’Halloran, Vorleben (2010) et Lumiere (2011), ont suivi, ce dernier ayant été mixé par le regretté Jóhann Jóhannsson. En 2011, il a également cofondé le groupe A Winged Victory for the Sullen avec Adam Wiltzie de Stars of the Lid, tout en continuant à composer des musiques de films. Dans le cadre de A Winged Victory For The Sullen, il a travaillé sur le film In the Shadow of Iris de Jalil Lespert en 2016. Cette musique est sortie sous la forme de l’album Iris la même année. Le catalogue du groupe comprend également Atomos (2014), basé sur une musique composée pour une pièce de danse de Wayne McGregor, chorégraphe résident du Royal Ballet de Londres ; The Undivided Five (2019), qui a été publié par Ninja Tune ; et leur dernier album Invisible Cities (2021), sorti en tant que projet parallèle sous leur propre label Artificial Pinearch Manufacturing. Il contient la musique de la performance live Invisible Cities, produite par le ManchesterFestival, que le groupe a enregistrée en 2019.

O’Halloran a signé avec le célèbre label de musique classique Deutsche Grammophon au début de 2019, publiant l’EP Sundoor (2019), qui propose une pièce de 20 minutes intitulée  » 196 Hz « , adaptée d’une composition spécifique au site de 2017 pour l’œuvre  » Sundoor At World’s End  » de l’artiste américain transdisciplinaire Slater Bradley. Son prochain album publié par le label, Silfur (2021), revisite certaines chansons de son catalogue, explorant le temps et le lieu. En 2021, il a contribué à l’album de Noël Winter Tales de Deutsche Grammophon, avec Bryan Senti, en écrivant « What Gently Flutters ».   O’Halloran a également produit la chanson « Into Me You See » de Katy Perry sur son album Witness en 2017, a collaboré avec Gyda Valtýsdóttir pour l’EP 3 Movements en 2017, et apparaît sur l’album posthume de Leonard Cohen Thanks For The Dance en 2019.

En 2019, il a créé la composition électronique 1 0 0 1 au Liquid Music Series de Minneapolis avec la chorégraphe Fukiko Takase. L’œuvre a été bien accueillie, mais les productions suivantes ont été interrompues par la pandémie. Le disque 1 0 0 1 d’O’Halloran est une extension de cette composition, qui s’éloigne de la musique introspective pour piano solo avec laquelle il s’est d’abord fait connaître. Enregistré aux studios RRO de Reykjavík, il met en scène son collaborateur Bryan Senti au violon, un chœur à huit voix, Paul Corley à la production électronique et le Budapest Art Orchestra, orchestré par Roman Vinuesa et mixé par Francesco Donadello. In 2011, he also co-founded the band A Winged Victory for the Sullen with Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid, while continuing his work scoring films. As part of A Winged Victory For The Sullen, he worked on Jalil Lespert’s film In the Shadow of Iris in 2016. This music was released as the album Iris the same year. The band’s catalogue also includes Atomos (2014), based on music composed for a dance piece by Wayne McGregor, resident choreographer for The Royal Ballet in London; The Undivided Five (2019), which was released by Ninja Tune; and their last album Invisible Cities (2021), released as a side project under their own label Artificial Pinearch Manufacturing. It contains music from the Manchester- Festival-produced live performance Invisible Cities, which the band scored in 2019.

O’Halloran signed with renowned classical music label Deutsche Grammophon in early 2019, releasing the EP Sundoor (2019), which offers a 20-minute piece entitled ‘196 Hz’, adapted from a 2017 site-specific composition for cross-disciplinary American artist Slater Bradley’s ‘Sundoor At World’s End’. His next album released by the label, Silfur (2021), revisits select songs from his catalogue, exploring time and place. In 2021, he contributed « What Gently Flutters » to the Deutsche Grammophon Christmas album Winter Tales, featuring Bryan Senti. O’Halloran also produced Katy Perry’s ‘Into Me You See’ on her 2017 album Witness, collaborated with Gyda Valtýsdóttir for the EP 3 Movements in 2017, and appears on Leonard Cohen’s 2019 posthumous album Thanks For The Dance.

In 2019 he premiered the electronic composition 1 0 0 1 at Minneapolis’s Liquid Music Series with choreographer Fukiko Takase. It was well-received, but subsequent productions were halted by the pandemic. O’Halloran’s record 1 0 0 1 is an expansion of that composition, marking a departure from the introspective solo piano music with which he first made his name. Recorded at RRO Studios in Reykjavík, it features his collaborator Bryan Senti on violin, an eight-voice choir, Paul Corley on electronic production, and the Budapest Art Orchestra orchestrated by Roman Vinuesa, mixed by Francesco Donadello. The album is set for release on Deutsche Grammophon on 22 March 2024.
